Coloquio

DAY 4: Digital Culture and Politics of Autonomy Forum

Fecha: 6 Octubre, 2013
Horario: 10:30 a 06:30
Lugar: Salón José Miguel Blanco, MNBA.

The Fourth Colloquium is structured as an open forum between participants and public. The conversation will be moderated from four central questions:

Are media artists aware of the importance of energy resources and the technological media used for the creation and dissemination of their work?

On the one hand, artists who work primarily with technology need to consider the energy expenses of the media used to carry and display their works like computers, video projectors, lighting and other implicit resources involved. On the other hand, artists have new creation and dissemination possibilities upon the emergence of new technological devices and interconnected networks. In this scenario of ongoing entrepreneurship of different applications, artists can create through potentially unlimited media. In other respects, these creative media, in the context of the immediacy and interactivity of the present state communication, are themselves dissemination media.

Which are the limits that can not be transgressed to achieve sustain the demands of progress and industrial development, without generating an irreversible damage to our ecosystem?

The energy charge of the problem of electricity generation in Chile is considered as a national problem, cutting across all daily processes both domestic and industrial. The social movements that emerged to protect natural heritage in 2011, seem to arouse in the public a sense of collective responsibility that rarely in the history of the country had emerged. Along with this problem, the public debate opened about the nationalization of natural resources such as copper and lithium, whose quality and quantity are higher compared to other Latin American deposits. These resources play a central role in the generation of new forms of energy.

Which are the potential areas of research and development of the relationship between art, science and technology on the Chilean context?

As Chile is a country of geographic diversity, many material resources can be investigated by scientists, applied by technologists and used by artists. It is also a country located in a privileged position for astronomical observation. Finally its native cultural tradition, colonial past and educational problems, allow demographic and sociological studies of global interest.

Which elements and interdisciplinary transvergences should a cultural policy include to account for permanent technological changes and research on new media art?

The convergence of specialists and aficionados on the relationship between art, science and technology present in these colloquiums provide a basis for modification or constitution of new cultural policies. According to the 11BAM curatorial principles, the networked community is particularly suited to meet the demands necessary to make such changes.
